Subscription revenue from Blizzard's recently-released World of Warcraft rose by an estimated 223 per cent in August compared to the month before following the launch of its vanilla Classic version. That's according to SuperData's monthly report, which claims that though this is an impressive increase in spending, it still clocks in lower than revenue brought in by August 2018's Battle for Azeroth expansion.

World of Warcraft was the third-biggest earner for August, rising four places from July's No.7 spot. Fortnite hangs tight in at No.6, while Playerunknown's Battlegrounds makes a return to the Top Ten in ninth place likely due to the overhaul that its Erangel map received at the end of July. Games platform Roblox brings up the rear, remaining in tenth place, the same as the month before. Overall, digital consumer spending across all platforms rose two per cent globally during August to a total of $8.9bn. PC and console make up 38 per cent of that figure, representing $3.4bn, while mobile takes the lion's share of 62 per cent. Despite WoW Classic’s success, however, it hasn’t topped the all-time World of Warcraft charts – Superdata reports that total revenue in August was still lower than what Blizzard earned this time last year, with the release of current expansion Battle for Azeroth. Given some of the skepticism surrounding WoW Classic ahead of its launch, however, I imagine Blizzard is pretty pleased with those results.

Shares of Activision Blizzard hit a nine-month high in August following World of Warcraft Classic’s release. In September, World of Warcraft Classic was hit by a series of distributed denial of service attacks, leading to unscheduled service downtime.
