  • If you’re on a low income, you may meet the criteria for council tax reduction where your bill is reduced based on how much you earn. All local establishment have different rules for who qualifies.
  • If you’re above pension age then you’ll get extra council tax reduction.
  • If someone in your house is disabled and the property has been adapted, you may qualify to have your council tax reduced by one band.

 If you are late more than 14 days in paying a council tax installment then you’ll be sent a reminder.  If you make the payment within the seven days of the reminder letter then you will be able to pay your council tax arrears installments continuously.

 Ways to collect the unpaid council tax

  • Using the bailiffs or 'enforcement agents'
  • Taking payments off from your wages using an attachment of earnings. This will be a fixed percentage of your take-home pay.
  • Taking payments from your reimbursement. A certain amount can be taken from income support, income based jobseekers allowance, income-related employment, and support allowance or pension credit.

If you have any problem regarding your council tax then you can contact the council tax arrears authority. You can make a complaint if you think you have been treated unfairly. The authority will answer your complaints within 12weeks.
