One of the most critical period in the education is the transition between school and college days; especially after passing the class 10 board exams. There are many instances where parents or students being guided by many in a way that allows students to fit into a stream falsely. Nonetheless, some kids are fortunate enough as the present day`s trends have given a boom of opportunities to study and sources to refer before opting their stream. Choosing a wrong stream in education or career is like fitting a square cork in a round mouthed bottle because a wrong choice can put them in a great discomfort and disinterest. It is essential to follow some standards while picking a higher education course. Few questions pondering in the heads of students includes, am I really fit into what I am choosing about? Are my skills and potential upto the demands that a course ask for?  Does a stream gives enough room to extend into long-term career perspectives? Are the subjects going to be a journey cake walk or challenging? Let us look at some of the criteria to be considered while choosing a specialty after the board exams.

What you want to look for?

  1. Very basic rule to be governed by a student is that whether I have a passion and enthusiasm towards what I am choosing? Gone are the days where very minimal areas were present after higher secondary schools but this is not the case now because present generation has ample opportunities to choose the best fit from the diversed body of subjects.
  2. Never take hasty decisions because someone in your family or friends succeeded by choosing a specific stream. Because, you are a different individual anyways thus it is important to think with an intuition and a rationalized approach. It is certain that your success is more when you choose what you love than to opt what is good.
  3. Do not be perplexed with wide number of doors inviting you as you often ended up with inability to settle for the right choice. The point is whether a stream makes a career and life however, at this stage you may need to compromise in certain areas. For example you love physics, chemistry and biology except the mathematics which is the core subject in science stream. In this case it is good to go with science by accepting the fact that you need to work hard for mathematics.
  4. Do not overlook on the reality because what you see sometimes seems like easy but in reality, you better have to research in depth about the subjects, areas, major lessons and practical aspects before picking your specialty area.
  5. Judge yourself by keeping in mind about your weaknesses and strengths. There is nothing wrong to consult who knows you better and the best way to do this is by taking a fair opinion from one of your favorite teachers or peers whom you strongly believe. Friends and your personal coaches are like a mirrors who can reflect the truth. However, do not believe in one sided or biased suggestions.
  6. Always think of past, present and future of yourself. After passing 10th, it is very essential to keep in mind about your past performance in a specific subject to determine the academic strengths and weaknesses.
  7. Changing a board from CBSE to ICSE or in any other manner is not highly advisable as you have already spent long time period in a board and it is advisable to continue the b0ard which you had opted for in the past.
  8. Give attention to your love towards subject, attitude, and personality. This a better approach as you always perform better when you love something but you can’t succeed even in the easiest stream if you dislike it.
  9. It is the right time to consult one of the qualified educational counsellor who is capable of understanding what you are. There are many private and institutional counsellors who are specialized in career who provides an idea about the whole process. If possible involve all the members of your family while doing this.
  10. Always check the career prospects, personal growth and the wide range of channels a subject or stream offers before choosing one. But there is no good and bad streams as such. Many opportunities are there in every field but an individual need to take the right steps while building a successful career.
  11. Keep in mind about the affordability and the financial aspects of the family as it is not a great idea to swim against the flow. Financial crisis in the middle of the course will anyway discourage tour motivation.
